Branding a company is always challenging. Every client has his/her own preferences and desires...and every designer has his/her own preferences and desires as well. Sometimes these preferences and desires line up- and the client and designer can work well together to collaborate on an amazing design. Oftentimes, however, differences between client and designer will exist throughout the entire process, and both will have to make compromises in their wishes.
Creating a brand for visionary film-maker Jonathan Kayser proved to be a very challenging yet rewarding experience. Not only is Jon a very talented and industrious film-maker, he's also one of my closest friends of the last 5 years (he was a groomsman in my wedding!). On top of all this, he has a very visual eye. Just a simple look at his demo reel (below) shows that he has an acute sense of design: typography, color, layout, and memorability. It is seldom that I've worked for a client with such an eye. I knew up front that Jon was going to have input and ideas. I wouldn't be surprised if he even drew *me a couple pictures...
And draw he did! And I did too. Back and forth we went, over a period of a few months. We also threw another young designer, Skylar Hartman, into the mix. He provided another voice of reason and originality to our decision making process.
Below is a few of the sketches and mockups that we came up with over the span of this project. As you can see, there was a lot of changes along the way!
And here's the final design!
And here's the new logo incorporated into Jon's powerful, jaw-dropping demo reel:
